The Creator Archetype

Welcome to this weeks overview of The Archetype System. For those who believe they do not need to define themselves as artists, please think again. We all know we are made up of many different aspects or archetypes, we have our lover side, our jester and when necessary your caregiver, but we are dealing with presenting products to a buying market and it is important that your market knows what they are buying.

I will consistently remind you we are in a sales industry and we like every other producer of items for sale must define the product and explain who this product is for. Can you imagine an advert for some kind of cleaner, but it does not define what the cleaner is, it could a carpet cleaner, toilet cleaner, kitchen cleaner or drain cleaner. This cleaner must also state who the product is for, it a home cleaner or industrial? An artist must do similar; they must state who they are are they the bad boy (outlaw) or a romantic (Lover),  they must to the best of their abilities state who they are aiming their product to, someone going through heartbreak, party animals etc.

“Do not try to please everyone!”

Today we tackle The Creator Archetype, which is slightly ironic as we are dealing with a creative industry, so in some way the majority of artists involved should be creators right?

Not necessarily

Creators are a special group within the world of artists, otherwise known as innovators who are the dreamers that work to build fresh, new sounds and visuals that begin trends and influence or change the direction industry takes. Truthfully all artists should be creators as they should be looking to build something, some form of artistic expression that they will be known and remembered for, but you and I both know this unfortunately is not always true.

Product – The Sims

There are many different products that Could be represented within this archetype, the key with all of them is the use of your imagination to create something. Other products like Lego or any building toy could be used as an example.

I have chosen the computer game The Sims, in this game you are encouraged to create your own character, home and life even. What ever you want to do is fine as there is no winner or loser.

With this freedom to create some amazing things have happened, with players creating Sims movies and music videos.

Artist – Timbaland

The artist I have chosen is one of a long line of producers turned artist; Timbaland. Known for his many collaborations with artists such as Aaliyah (RIP), Missy Elliot, Pussy Cat Dolls, Madonna and most notably Justin Timberlake.

Timbaland made a name for himself with his innovative sound that revolutionised the Hip Hop R&B music industry. His sound was so different that he immediately stood out which in turn lead to much of the industry requesting him to produce for their artists, or other producers emulating his sound to stay in touch with this new musical trend.

Being a Creator

Being a creator is not all about creating a new sound, it could be based on a new look or movement, anything that is new an innovative. You do not follow the conventional trends you are brave enough to try something that no one else is doing. Lady Gaga although considered a misfit (outlaw archetype family) displays her creator side with her Haas of Gaga visuals, which may not be her own creations but to the rest of  the world she is changing the visual trends for others to follow.
